He was Captain of militia in the war of 1812 and served through the last reign of George III into the reign of George IV. He married Mary, daughter of Capt. John Rice Jan. 7 1786 and they lived together over 61 years.
Don't know what he was converted and joined the Baptist Church but he wrotte a letter to Dr. T. Baldwin (1753-1826), of Boston, in 1810 telling of a "powerful reformation" in Clements, when about 200 were converted to the Lord; and the glorius work spread away "up the river" to Bridgetown and elsewhere. He was called to preach about this time, and was ordained to the gospel ministry in 1822, and continued a faithful minister of Jesus Christ to the end. I am looking for a link to my Great Grandmother:
Helen Van Der Lyn Balcom (SSN: 551-40-0837)
B: 11-24-1892 in Fitchburg, MA
M: Common Law in MA to Albert David Houser
D: 1976
Her Father: Ward V. Balcom born in Oxford, NY
Her Mother: Stella A. Arnold born in Fitchburg, MA
Helen would not tell us anything about herself. She wouldn't give us her birth date until 1955 when she applied for Social Security. At that time, she was living in Deer River, MN with her common law husband, Albert David Houser, and her 4 children (Tom, Mary, Fran and Marian - all "Houser"). According to a copy of my Grandmother's (Marian) birth certificate, she also had 2 other children prior to her life with Albert Houser. I am trying to find these other children or her previous spouse. Any help or direction would be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Kristina (Moore) <jeffnkris@sbcglobal.net>

Page 31--In 1817 Jacob Balcom and family came to Hidi and the next year moved onto land known as the Darby flats, two miles above on the Cattaraugus Creek. There were evidences that civilization had predeced them, as they found apple trees growing there, planted by unknown hands years before. A notable gathering was held in Buffalo, NY. The first reunion of the Balcom Family which was held August 7, 1901. An afternoon reception was held in the New York Building on the Pan-American grounds, and in the evening a meeting was held at Balcom Hall (music rooms) on Main Street.
The late Villeroy Balcom from whom our neighboring town was named was represented by his grand-daughter, Miss Nisbet (or Nesbet-Ms. Minnie J. Nesbet) of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, an only daughter of Mrs. Robert Nesbet nee Catherine Balcom, who is well known to many readers of the News.
Two brothers (Balcombes) came from Balcombe, England, near the end of the 17th century, and settled in Mass., and all the American Balcombes (or Balcoms) are descendants, the final "be" having been dropped from that name (by the American Balcoms)….About one hundred were present at the reunion, and L. Frank Balcom (spelled S. Frank Balcom in another record), Indianapolis, Ind, who planned the gathering presented greetings from Balcombe (England) connections. Also, handsome views of the town, church, Balcombe Castle, etc.
Miss Nesbet then presented a copy of "The Cherry Creek News" for which Mrs. Nesbet has been a subscriber for many years, giving the correspondence from our American Balcom, and he was asked to forward a copy to Balcombe, England.
Charles Balcom of Salem, Mass., produced a few apples picked last week from a tree growing on the site of the original Balcom homestead in Mass., and Frank Balcom placed them in a fruit dish brought over from England by the first Balcombes. It was voted to send a portion of the apples to Mrs. Nesbet, who is at present visiting at Burlington, Ontario, Canada, as the daughter of the man from whom our American (town of) Balcom was named.
Charles Balcom also exhibited a number of views of Sudbury, Massachusetts, showing the site of the original home, also the home where Villeroy Balcom's father and grandfather were born, also "The Wayside Inn", which Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the poet, made famous by his "Tales of a Wayside Inn", also views of the pioneer Balcoms in the Old Sudbury burying ground. Mr. Balcom took these pictures especially for this reunion.
Adam Howe married Jerusha Balcom, a cousin of Villeroy Balcom, and her sister, Rebecca, married Daniel Puffer, a brother of Mrs. Villeroy Balcom. When Lyman Howe, the landlord of the Wayside Inn died a bachelor, the (ownership of the) property went to his aunt, Mrs. Puffer, as his nearest relative, she being then in her 96th year.
Interesting speeches were made by the Reverend Royal Balcom of Jackson, Michigan, and G. Balcom of Macon, Georgia, Stephan Balcom of Boston, Mass., Hon. M. Balcom, Chicago, Ill, and H. Tracy Balcom, Buffalo.
The "News" was especially complimented, as being an excellent and an exceptionally good weekly newspaper both in general arrangement, type, news, and so forth.
Mrs. Orton James of this place is a grandneice of the late Villeroy Balcom, whose name figured so prominently at the Balcom Reunion mentioned.
[My great-grandfather, Joseph Balcom, Templeton, Mass, father of Villeroy and Fidelia (a wealthy man) was Captain of the Guard that executed Major Andre.
My great-grandmother, wife of Joseph Balcom, mother of Villeroy and Fidelia was buried at Zanesville, Wisconsin.
Balcoms have been connected with different Christian churches: one Balcom was a Congregational minister in Boston; another Balcom was an Episcopal minister in South Carolina etc.
(notes of Clayton C. Greene and Elmer A Greene.-copied by Ruth H. Greene Aug 4, 1964.)]
[My Great-grandmother, wife of Joseph Balcom, mother of Villeroy and Fidelia, lived (in later life) with her daughter, Mrs. Catherine Nisbet, mother of Minnie J. Nisbet, the newspaperwoman (an unusual occupation for a woman in her day, and one which was not approved of by all her relatives.) Ruth Greene 1964.]
Villeroy Balcom's father, Joseph Balcom, served all through the Revolutionary War. He was in the Concord fight. He was Captain of the Guard when Major Andre was hanged, and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. Although quite young, he rose to be lieutenant. He formed an intimacy with Count deVilleroy, a French officer, and when his oldest son was born, he named him for his former companion in arms. (C.C. Greene & Elmer A. Greene as given to Ruth Greene)
[Buffalo Evening Times, July 26, 1903 as copied by R. Greene in 1920s]
Villeroy Balcom, for whom the town of Balcom in Chautauqua County was named, was one of the few Democrats who held office continuously for years under all changes of administration. He was born in Templeton, Mass., and came to Villenova in Chautauqua County when quite young, and took up his first land in 1816, when there were only eleven families in town. He was appointed postmaster, Dec 14, 1826, and held the office more than thirty years. He carried the first mails one year from Fayette (now Silver Creek) to Cherry Creek on horseback.
In 1831, he was commissioned by Governor Troop as Captain of a rifle company. He organized the first in town. He served for a long time as Justice of Peace, and was elected supervisor eight times.
His farm of over eight hundred acres joined Cherry Creek. Part of it he bought on the Holland Land Company, and part from the late William H. Seward (famous in anti-slavery movement-US senator 1849-59-Secretary of State to Lincoln and Andrew Jackson (1861-69) ---persuaded USA to purchase Alaska). Seward met Villeroy Balcom in Buffalo for the transfer of the deeds etc. Mr. Balcom did most of the land business for that section, drawing up the transfer of the deeds etc. In the Registry office at Mayville (Chautauqua County) are hundreds of deeds written by him.
He was a staunch Democrat, and was in correspondence with Samuel J. Tilden (Democratic candidate for presidency in 1876 against Hayes; Tilden lost by one vote only) and other leaders of the party. He was urged to run for congress, but had no desire for public life. After his death his widow went to reside with her daughter, Mrs. Robert Nesbet, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
The Balcom family came from Balcombe in Sussex, England, toward the close of the 17th century, and settled in Charleston, Mass. Last winter Mrs. Nesbet received a letter from Balcom England asking if she could furnish a picture of her father, Villeroy Balcom, as a history of Balcom was in the course of preparation, and having heard that a town in America was named for him they would like to include a picture of the man who was a link between the home of his ancestors and America.
